[Letter] 1876 June 14, Midway, [Ky.] to J.A. Broadus, Greenville, S.C. / H.F. Kerfoot. 1876.

James Petigru Boyce, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, offered Kerfoot a teaching position in the seminary, and Broadus wrote congratulating him. Kerfoot said "almost everything is against my going now. This is my decided feeling." He had reached a point in his study of "Greek and Hebrew, from which I can look hopefully to some speedy and real attainments in these languages." If he stopped now, he feared he would lose his progress. He protested, "If I stop sermonizing now, I am afraid, with my temperment, I would soon feel that the Lord did not call me to preach." If he is to teach church history, "it will be very important that I be able to read easily some of the fathers."
